AUTUMN QUANTA V: VANISHING POINTS

Saturday 12 December 2020 20:00 – 22:00
For the final event of the 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙢𝙣 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣, we contemplate an event horizon of distant futures, micro bacterial evolutions, questions of human hubris sustainability, and the appearing and disappearing acts of time and space. These last three projects, though they spiral off in disparate directions make us consider the discreet values, the most human-scale definition of the term 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮, that underpin our cultures and our connections within them.

Here we confront another future made more salient in the moment of the pandemic. Visual artist 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘵𝘪 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘻 will perform a live transmission from a wet lab in a desolate spot in Finland to introduce 𝙇𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙖 with Cyanobacteria and other space-related macros/microbial beings, with additional interactive material drawn from human and other than human lifeforms. Tenetz contemplates this microbial cinema with a view towards the possible alternate futures of the biosphere. He presents harsh environments reflected through radiating live bio-materials transformed into audio and visual signals. Technospheric records of data and visuals are developed through machine learning.

This short work is concerned with 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙪𝙢 𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 (from which the tile comes) in relation to the creative process and the real spirit of the human body as a vehicle for suffering and transformation. Thus, the approach to composition is from an architectural, spatial perspective. Visual and sonic elements are designed and positioned in close relation and interaction with the performance space. The static architectural characters get accentuated and extended by the ephemeral audiovisual elements, entangling in an immersive play of structure, light, and sound. The minimal architectural character of the Kunstkapel invites an equally minimal design of visual and sonic elements. 4 light projectors will be used: wash-beam moving headlamps, able to scan the space in all directions with powerful light beams morphing from tight focus to wide washes. The beams will create dynamic, immersive light structures complementing the static architecture. Sound will be generated using rhythmic pattern synthesizers with a cyclical nature reminiscent of the space’s shape.

AUTUMN QUANTA IV: SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING (UNDERCURRENCIES)

Friday 11 December 2020 20:00 – 00:30
The fourth event of our 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙢𝙣 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 is devoted to the quanta that make up imagery which remains at the edges of human consciousness. These quanta insistently disturb our sleep in their slow and inexorable emergence into our thought patterns and our shifting mental landscapes. These are the undercurrencies that gradually redefine our perception and our orientation in space. We now occupy a decisively changed environment before we have barely begun to notice it.

A battery of projection operations produces a meditation on visual stimulus and the recurrence of unconscious images and operations spawned in the time of Covid. A system of feedbacking programs creates sudden jolts that briefly pin shadows to the walls as another form of contact tracing while unsettling reminders and insistent recurrences may be dimly absorbed.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗔 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲
A secret game for all performers and spectators which is based upon the laws of social distancing and ultimate conscious removal from the increasingly lethal atmosphere. This game works like children avoiding walking on cracks while its visible signs are as subtle but one must look closely to catch this subliminal series of maneuvers at work.

For this event, a synthesis of fractals, non-locality, and emergence will be conducted. To understand this plane we need to obstruct the mundane and seed interpretations in abstract space. The piece is an audio/visual deep dive into understanding, seeing, and listening to our probabilistic reality. 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘛𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘢𝘹 𝘷𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘭.

Deserter & The Nomads is a cover band that creates site-specific concert performances of individual songs that at their longest have lasted eight hours. The group has chosen Charles Mingus’ early work composed in Los Angeles, Weird Nightmare, as a tribute to the Coronavirus period in which we live with its weird new normals but also as a reminder of the possibility of a new passion in the context of latent misery. This performance of Weird Nightmare is not expected to be one of the more demanding concerts as it’s only expected to clock in at under four hours.
